The baby teeth play an important role in the development of the permanent teeth. Therefore, it’s essential to teach children how to take care of their teeth from an early age. We recommend bringing your child to the dentist as early as age 2 (as early as possible). While no treatment will be done at this stage, it allows your child to gradually get accustomed to visiting the dentist in a playful way.

Children are more susceptible to cavities and tooth erosion than adults. This is because the enamel on a child’s teeth and molars is not fully hardened during eruption. That’s why we recommend visiting the dentist twice a year.

The dentist may recommend an additional cleaning if your child is at higher risk for cavities. The dentist or hygienist may also opt for a fluoride treatment. In this case, a gel will be applied to the molars, and your child should not eat or drink for an hour afterward.

Newly erupted permanent teeth with deep grooves will be sealed. With sealing, the dentist can close or seal (deep) grooves and pits in the teeth and molars. This protects the teeth and molars from cavities. The treatment is painless.

What can you tell before the visit?

Explain what can be seen. Tell your child that they might get to sit in the chair and that the dentist may want to take a quick look in their mouth. Spark their curiosity. Never tell your child that it’s “not scary” or that they “don’t need to be afraid.” We will make sure that your child has the best possible experience.

Reimbursement

The basic insurance currently covers all dental check-ups and (almost all) procedures for children aged 0 to 18, with the exception of crowns, bridges, and orthodontics.
